The Reader

(Reflections on the film based on Bernhard Schlink's novel)

"Sing to me of the man, Muse, the man of twists and turns driven time and again off course, once he had plundered the hallowed heights of Troy", reads the Reader out loud; but he lies not under the white sheets of the past, in the warmth of two naked bodies, but in the aged and lonely comfort of his pajamas.

Why did he not talk to her that day, why did he not save her? Why will he love her forever in silence?

There are stories that we revisit along the years, hoping that this time the hero's fate (the Reader's fate) will be a better one, that we will find at last our lovers' happy ending...

In my dreams, the Reader will never need to wear pajamas.
